NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR THE BRITISH ACADEMY CYMRU AWARDS

BAFTA Cymru’s annual ceremony honours excellence in broadcasting and production within film, games and television in Wales and will take place on 8 October at St David’s Hall, Cardiff.

The 1966 Aberfan disaster in Wales will feature heavily at next month’s ceremony following the announcement of the nominations last Friday. The one-hour film poem Aberfan: The Green Hollow leads with seven nominations, with The Aberfan Young Wives Club and Aberfan – The Fight for Justice each receiving four. Sherlock and feature film The Lighthouseare among the other programmes, films and games receiving nominations.

A preview of The Commuter, an episode of Channel 4’s sci-fi anthology series. Followed by a Q+A with BAFTA-winning writer Jack Thorne (National Treasure), director Tom Harper (War and Peace) and actor Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game).
 
ROCLIFFE NEW WRITING SHOWCASE: CHILDREN’S MEDIA
Come and see our showcase of three 10-minute script extracts from emerging UK writing talent from all over the country. Industry guests from BAFTA-winning The Amazing World of Gumball, Tobi Wilson (senior writer) and Sarah Fell (executive producer), join us to offer their insights.
 
NEW: TV PREVIEW: GUNPOWDER + Q&A
Join director J Blakeson, writer Ronan Bennett and actors Kit Harrington and Liv Tyler for a lively Q&A. Gunpowder is a three-part BBC drama following Robert Catesby, the Warwickshire gentleman behind the Gunpowder plot of 1605 which will be screened ahead of the Q&A.
 
NEW: MASTERCLASS: THE MAKING OF NATIONAL TREASURE
The team behind the BAFTA-winning mini-series National Treasure discusses their creative process. Panellists include BAFTA-winning director Marc Munden.

Broadcaster and journalist Rick Edwards delves into the science behind five-time BAFTA-nominee Ex Machina (2014) with Dr Michael Brooks (The New Scientist), following a screening of the film.
 
NEW: KIDS TV PREVIEW: DESCENDANTS 2 + Q&A
A Disney Channel Original Movie continuing the hit story about the teenage sons and daughters of the most infamous fairy tale villains. Followed by a Q&A with actor Thomas Doherty (The Lodge).

YOUNG PRESENTER COMPETITION
We’ve extended the deadline for our competition to unearth the next star presenter. We’ll be asking entrants to interview an older friend or family member about their first film, games or TV memory as we celebrate the nation’s cultural heritage in BAFTA’s 70th year. If you know any 7-14 year-olds who would be up for the challenge, they can enter until 21 September.
 
GIFT OF THE ACADEMY
There is one week left to apply for BAFTA’s ‘Gift of the Academy’ scheme. If you work at an organisation whose remit is connected with film, games or television or whose charitable aims are similar to ours, then you could be eligible for complimentary room hire or other charity gifts. 
 
ROCLIFFE FILM APPLICATIONS
Are you a screenwriter looking to take your career to the next level? Applications for the BAFTA Rocliffe Short and Feature Film Competition are open until Tuesday 26 September. 
 
CLAIRE FOY TO RECEIVE BRITANNIA HONOUR
The BAFTA-nominated actress has been selected to receive the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year at this year’s AMD British Academy Britannia Awards, presented by American Airlines. The award, presented by Burberry, pays tribute to a talented British artist whose outstanding performances in a year have demonstrated the high quality of their craftsmanship.
