Interview with the actress and singer Christina Paterno.

Di Vito “Nik H.” Nicoletti

Hi Christina!! It’s a great pleasure to have you as our guest on Vocespettacolo.com. Lets’ start from the first question.. Let’s have a jump into the past. What was your dream since when you were a kid? …What would you like to do?
I USED TO DREAM THAT I’D GROW UP TO BE BETTE MIDLER… NO, I MEAN ACTUALLY BE HER! HA! FOR SOME REASON I REALLY TOOK TO HER BRASH AND BRAWN AND LOVED HOW BALLSY SHE WAS. SHE SEEMED TOTALLY UNAFRAID TO BE HERSELF AND I THOUGHT, IF THAT’S WHAT BEING AN ACTRESS AND A SINGER MEANS, I WANT TO DO THAT TOO.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?…Who is Christina Paterno?
UM, WHERE TO START…? I AM FROM AUSTRALIA. MY PARENTS ARE SICILIAN IMMIGRANTS. I GREW UP IN A PIZZA RESTAURANT, VERY MOM AND POP STYLE… I REMEMBER ANSWERING THE TELEPHONES AND TAKING ORDERS FROM A SUPER YOUNG AGE. I THINK IT MUST HAVE BEEN HILARIOUS TO SEE THIS LITTLE GIRL STANDING ON A CHAIR TO REACH THE PHONE ON THE WALL, TAKING ORDERS AND WORKING LIKE AN ADULT… I COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT COFFEE, I SERIOUSLY DREAM ABOUT LATTES… I LOVE THE BEACH- I GREW UP IN SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE WORLD AND IT
WASN’T UNTIL MOVING AWAY AND LIVING IN NEW YORK FOR 3 YEARS (WHERE YOU ARE SO FAR FROM THE OCEAN) THAT I REALIZED HOW MUCH I NEED TO BE CLOSE TO WATER. IT’S LIKE THERAPY FOR ME.
I LOVES CLOTHES AND SHOPPING AND FANTASIZE ABOUT HAVING A CLOSET THE SIZE OF MY APARTMENT ONE DAY. I THINK I’M ADDICTED TO THE THRILL OF MAKING A PURCHASE. I MEAN, THERE ARE WORSE THINGS TO BE ADDICTED TO IN
LIFE, RIGHT?

Christina actress: how did you start and how was your first experience ?
MY FIRST PROFESSIONAL JOB WAS AN INTERNATIONAL NIKE COMMERCIAL. IT WAS AMAZING. I’D NEVER BEEN ON A REAL SET BEFORE OR HAD A WARDROBE FITTING OR A HAIR AND MAKEUP TEST AND IT WAS JUST SO THRILLING. I GREW
UP IN A SMALL TOWN, SO IT REALLY WAS LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE… TRUE  STORY- I NEVER, EVER SAW THE COMMERCIAL AND TO THIS DAY HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT! THAT WAS A BIG LESSON- NOT TO GET TOO EXCITED ABOUT ANYTHING UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY SEE YOUR FACE IN IT. MY VERY FIRST EXPERIENCE, HOWEVER, WAS A SCHOOL PLAY. I WAS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL AND THE PLAY WAS A REIMAGINING OF ALL THE FAMOUS FAIRYTALES. I GOT TO PLAY THE WICKED WITCH FROM SNOW WHITE. THE MINUTE I STEPPED OUT ON STAGE AND FELT THE LIGHT ON MY FACE, I WAS HOOKED. THAT WAS IT. AFTER THAT NIGHT I BEGGED MY PARENTS TO ENROLL ME IN ACTING CLASSES.

What’s the best and worst aspect of your job?
THE BEST- IS BEING ON SET. OR STAGE. I LOVE THE “PRESSURE”, THE ENERGY THAT PERCOLATES AROUND BEING PART OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS. THE WORST- NEVER KNOWING WHAT YOUR NEXT JOB IS, AND AUDITIONING… SORRY THAT’S TWO THINGS. I’M TRYING TO RECALIBRATE HOW I LOOK AT AUDITIONS; INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM THIS BIG ARDUOUS HURDLE TO MY NEXT JOB, I’M TRYING TO SEE THEM AS ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO ACT… THAT
DEFINITELY HELPS TAKES THE PRESSURE OFF AND ADD THE FUN!

About job proposals, what’s the one you’d absolutely refuse, and the one you’d like to receive but you still haven’t ?
THAT’S HARD… I AM ALL FOR PLAYING UNLIKEABLE CHARACTERS IF THEY SERVE THE LARGER STORY. WHAT I AM NOT ABOUT, IS ANYTHING THAT IS UNREASONABLY GRATUITOUS. AND A ROLE I’D LIKE TO BE OFFERED? HOW ABOUT THREE (I’M SO GREEDY!) – 1. MY EQUIVALENT OF A CARRIE BRADSHAW. 2. SALLY BOWLES… I LOVE CABARET. 3. A BETTE DRAPER TYPE- I’M DYING TO DO PERIOD DRAMA.

What does Christina like the most about herself and what the less?
I’VE BEEN TOLD I HAVE A VERY POWERFUL PRESENCE. I LIKE THAT A LOT… I DON’T LIKE THAT I’M NOT ALWAYS COMFORTABLE TO LIVE IN THAT ESSENCE OF MYSELF.

Do you comply more to your head or to your heart?

DEFINITELY MY HEART… MY FRIENDS TELL ME I SHOULD USE MY HEAD MORE OFTEN!

What can a dream be useful for? Have you got many?
I THINK DREAMS ARE LIKE OUR HEART’S WAY OF TELLING US WHAT WE TRULY WANT OUT OF LIFE… BUT IT’S CRUCIAL THAT WE DON’T PUT THOSE MESSAGES AND IMAGES ON A PEDESTAL; YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THEY ARE ATTAINABLE.

Is life always better than a nice movie?
UGH, SO MUCH!… BUT THERE’S NOTHING LIKE ESCAPING INTO ANOTHER WORLD FOR 2 HOURS OR SO 🙂

What’s happiness for Christina?
WATCHING THE MORNING NEWS WITH MY MUM, A LATTE IN HAND…AND ACTING, OF COURSE! NOTHING IS MORE REWARDING THAN TELLING STORIES THAT REACH AND AFFECT PEOPLE OR BRING THEM JOY. AND WHEN SOMEONE TELLS YOU THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO CONNECT WITH YOUR CHARACTER OR THAT IT HIT SOMETHING INSIDE FOR THEM- WELL, NOTHING FEELS BETTER THAN THAT!

Thanks a lot Christina you’ve been very kind. Voce Spettacolo wishes you all the best in your career and life.
