Ciao Julian, grazie per essere ospite di Voce Spettacolo. Vieni da Londra ma hai origini italiane…a proposito, lo parli un po’?
Si. Sono molto British, ma fiero delle mie origini italiane. I miei nonni erano persone meravigliose ed hanno avuto una parte importante nella mia infanzia. Amo l’Italia. Mi piace la cultura ed un giorno uno dei miei sogni è di parlare Italiano!
Ci dici qualcosa in più di te? Come hai iniziato a cantare?
Ho iniziato a cantare molto piccolo nelle band a scuola. Un mio insegnante mi ha incoraggiato a cantare. Ero un po’ timido all’inizio. La mia scuola era abbastanza dura ed era sicuramente vista come un posto poco idoneo dove cantare. Dopo un po’ sono diventato più sicuro di me stesso e non ho guardato più indietro. Dalla mia band a scuola sono andato a cantare nei ristoranti e bar ed ho cominciato a scrivere canzoni a 14 anni con un vicino di casa che viveva di fronte a me. Ci riunivamo dopo la scuola e nei weekend. Ero ossessionato dalla musica.
Hai avuto un enorme successo in Europa, Francia, Belgio, Svizzera, anche grazie al tuo singolo “Wonder why” che nel 2011 ha ricevuto una grossa diffusione radio ed è stato premiato con il disco di platino. Ti aspettavi un tale risultato positivo e responso da parte del pubblico?
Onestamente non ci potevo credere. Ho scritto la canzone in camera da letto. L’ho cantata nei bar e in serate a “microfono aperto” a Londra e d’improvviso è diventato tutto incredibile.
Sei molto giovane ma vanti già collaborazioni con importanti artisti come Jamiroquai, Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Beyoncè, Fedde Le Grand e molti altri. Come ti hanno ispirato tutte queste connessioni e come ti hanno aiutato a farti crescere professionalmente? Secondo te quanto sono importanti i collegamenti con altri artisti nel settore per esprimersi al meglio?
Tutti questi incontri sono stati vitali per me. Se non avessi incontrato Jamiroquai non avrei mai registrato il mio primo album, e se non avessi incontrato Mark Ronson, non avrei mai fatto i miei tour ed imparato così tanto e così giovane. Beyoncè ha avuto un profondo effetto su di me in termini di professionalità e talento. Fui così ispirato da lei serata dopo serata.
Quanto sono importanti i tuoi fan per te? Dedichi loro un po’ del tuo tempo?
Sono importantissimi! Mi danno la voglia di continuare a far musica ogni giorno. Mi piace incontrare i miei fan perché sono sempre stati molto leali con me.
Hai di recente pubblicato il tuo nuovo singolo “Miracle”, un pezzo molto melodico, prodotto in collaborazione con il produttore belga Lost Frequencies, che sta scalando le classifiche francesi ed anche quelle europee. Ci dici com’è nato questo pezzo e cosa ti aspetti?
La canzone è davvero importante per me. L’ho scritta come messaggio positivo per la gente quando abbiamo vissuto un periodo negativo l’anno scorso in Europa. Volevo fare un pezzo che fosse universale. Spero solo che il mio messaggio possa viaggiare per il mondo. Sarebbe un sogno per me.
Cosa puoi dirci dei tuoi programmi futuri e nuovi progetti ?
Sto ultimando il mio album e per cominciare i Festival estivi a maggio. Sono davvero emozionato.

Hello Julian, thanks for being our guest on Voce Spettacolo. You’re from London but have Italian origins… by the way do you speak some Italian?
Yes. I’m very much British but am proud of my Italian roots. My grandparents were wonderful people who played a huge part in my childhood. I love Italy. I love the culture and one day one of my dreams is to Speak Italian!
Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? How did you start singing?
I started singing really young at school in bands. A teacher pushed me to sing. I was a bit shy at the start. My school was quite tough and it was definitely seen as ‘uncool’ to sing. But after I while I built up the confidence and never looked back. From my school band I went onto to playing in Restaurants and bars and started writting songs when I was 14 with a neighbor of mine who lived opposite me. We jammed after school and at weekends. I was obsessed with music.
You’ve had such a big success in Europe, France, Belgium, Switzerland, also thanks to your single “Wonder why” which in 2011 received large radio airplay and eventually reached platinum status. Did you expect such an impressive outcome and positive response by the public?
Honestly I couldn’t believe it. I wrote the song in a bedroom. Played it in bars and open mic nights in London and suddenly it was an incredible moment.
You’re very young but have already had collaborations with important artists like Jamiroquai, Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé, Fedde Le Grand and many others. How all these connections have inspired you and helped in order to grow in your career? According to you how important are the connections in the industry with other artists so to better express oneself?
These various meetings were vital to me. If I hadn’t met Jamiroquai I would have never recorded my first album, and hadn’t I met Mark Ronson I would have never toured and learnt so much at that young age. Beyoncè had a profound effect on me in terms of her professionalism and talent. I was so inspired by her night after night.
How important are your fans for you? Do you dedicate them some of your time?
Vital! They give me the desire to keep making music every day. I love meeting my fans and they’ve been so loyal to me.
You’ve recently released your new single “Miracle”, a very melodic song produced in collaboration with Belgian producer Lost Frequencies, which is now climbing France and also European music charts. Can you tell us how your new single was born and what your expectations are?
The song is so important to me. I wrote it as a positive message to people when times were so bad last year in Europe. I wanted to make a song that felt universal. I just hope that this message will travel all over the world. That would be a dream for me.
What can you tell us about your future plans and new upcoming projects?
I’m just finishing my album and start summer festivals in May. So I’m excited.
