Ultime Notizie

It is a twist that M. Night Shyamalan is probably enjoying. On the recent weekend where Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins and Space Jam: A New Legacy were expected to duke it out for the domestic box office crown, Old, the latest horror thriller from the filmmaker noted for twists in his films, instead rose to the top.

In another twist, Old also slugged it out with Snake Eyes in a close contest in the North American market and emerged, well, the new box champ. Shyamalan’s movie, inspired by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederick Peeters’ Swiss graphic novel, Sandcastle, scared up $16.5 million.

Shot in the Dominican Republic, Old is the first movie that Shyamalan filmed entirely away from his usual turf, Greater Philadelphia. The newest thriller from the director of The Sixth SenseUnbreakableSigns and Split stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Alex Wolff and Thomasin McKenzie.

Snake Eyes, featuring Henry Golding in his first lead action role, came a close second with $13.35 million. The Robert Schwentke-directed action-adventure is the Malaysian-born Golding’s transition from rom-com since he made his breakthrough as a Hollywood leading man in Jon M. Chu’s blockbuster, Crazy Rich Asians.

The Asian cast-led Snake Eyes, an origin story of the titular character and a reboot of the G.I. Joe franchise, also stars Haruka Abe, Andrew Koji, Takehiro Hira and Iko Uwais.

Cate Shortland’s Black Widow raked in $11.6 million, good enough for the number three spot. Black Widow, which showcases Scarlett Johansson as the latest Avenger to get her own film, dropped 55% in its earnings from the previous weekend.

Malcolm D. Lee’s Space Jam fell from its debut at the top to fourth place. With a 69 % decline from its opening weekend figures, the live action-animation hybrid also streaming on HBO Max collected $9.56 million at the turnstiles.

With a cast headed by basketball legend LeBron James, Don Cheadle and Cedric Joe, the standalone sequel to the 1996 hit has earned $51.37 million so far.

In fifth place was Justin Lin’s F9 which took in $4.7 million. The Vin Diesel starrer has a cumulative total of $163.3 million after five weekends.

Comprising the rest of the top ten were Adam Robitel’s Escape Room: Tournament of Champions ($3.4 million), Tom McGrath’s The Boss Baby: Family Business ($2.7 million), Everardo Gout’s The Forever Purge ($2.3 million), John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place II ($1.25 million) and Morgan Neville’s Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain ($830,000).The latter is a documentary that has cracked the magic ten since it debuted.

In the international box office race, China – the world’s largest film market – has yet to schedule the release of Black Widow and other recent Hollywood titles. In the meantime, domestic productions reigned at the Chinese box office.

White Snake 2: The Tribulation of the Green Snake’s $29.8 million earnings made it the number one in both China and the overseas market. The computer animation fantasy sequel, also known as Green Snake, features the original voice cast reprising their roles.

In other offshore territories, these films garnered the following earnings: Black Widow ($14.5 million), Space Jam 2 ($12.6 million), F9 ($11.59 million), The Boss Baby 2 ($7.19 million), Old ($6.5 million) and Snake Eyes ($4 million).
