3rd Annual Panamanian International Film Festival in LA Supports Puerto Rican Relief Effort With Special Screening of Emmy winning documentary “The Last Colony.”
The Panamanian International Film Festival in Los Angeles (PIFF/LA) has selected Emmy award-winning director Juan Agustín Marquez’ documentary about the relationship between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, The Last Colony, for inclusion in PanaFest, an all-day celebration of international Latino arts and culture to be held on November 4th at the South Park Center in Downtown LA. The film has been chosen to address a lack of awareness about Puerto Rican history and to encourage engagement in the ongoing humanitarian crisis assailing our fellow citizens. The screening of The Last Colony will be followed by a Q&A with director Juan Agustín Marquez and special guests. Proceeds from PanaFest’s closing block will be contributed to Puerto Rico relief efforts.
“Fewer than half of Americans know Puerto Ricans are US citizens,” says director Marquez. “Being part of PIFFLA’s Panafest is important to our mission of educating and inspiring filmgoers to discover more about this vibrant and innovative community.”
This year, PIFFLA’s event features films from Panama, Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela, Santo Domingo, El Salvador, and the U.S. in a lively mixture of drama, thrillers, comedy and even a dollop of horror. Documentaries touch on themes ranging from emerging feminism to the complex subject of immigration to the role of technology in political resistance. “We are excited to be leveraging the power of film and storytelling to illuminate what connects us and erase borders that keep us apart,” says Carlos Carrasco, PIFF/LA’s Artistic Director.
