Interview with Dj and Producer MENDO

Il nostro redattore Michele Valente ha intervistato Mendo, celebre Dj e Produttore internazionale. Di seguito l’intervista esclusiva rilasciata per voi lettori.
 
Ciao David! Grazie per essere ospite di Voce Spettacolo. Tu occupi un posto importante nel panorama house mondiale. Ci dici come hai iniziato a fare il dj e produrre la tua musica?
Il mio interesse per la musica elettronica è iniziato alla fine degli anni ’80 quando stava emergendo l’acid house. Ero l’unico ragazzo a scuola che l’ascoltava perché a tutti piaceva il rap, hard rock o new wave; con le mie magliette e pantaloni stampate con grandi sorrisi, non ero certo parte del gruppo. Ho cominciato a suonare in club locali a Ginevra (dove sono nato), ma il mio primo vero inizio è stata la produzione della prima versione di “Everybody I Got Him” su etichetta Groove On di George Morel, nel 2000. Poi c’è stata la produzione di “Tell Me” in collaborazione con Christie K, l’anno dopo, sempre su Groove On, che è salita al numero 1 su Dj Mag Uk.
Ma il pezzo “Everybody I Got Him” davvero mi ha dato una spinta in avanti. Luciano si innamorò della nuova versione 2009 e mi chiese di unirmi alla casa di produzione Cadenza.
Hai lavorato con grandi artisti come Steve Lawler, Dj Sneak, Nina Kravitz, Deadmau5, Yousef e molti altri, il ché ti ha permesso di essere conosciuto come uno dei migliori produttori nel settore. Quando remixi i tuoi pezzi, a cosa t’ispiri maggiormente?
La cosa più importante per me è avere un buon campione o pezzo vocale che mi colpisca, questo è quello che fa sì che mi dedichi a lavorarci. Anche se ricevo un ottimo pezzo, senza un campione che mi colpisca, il lavoro potrebbe essere un incubo. Di solito non accetto di remixare un pezzo che non abbia quell’elemento, non importa da chi mi arriva il pezzo.
Hai suonato in tutto il mondo nei maggiori club. Come organizzi la tua vita in rapporto alla tua impegnata agenda internazionale?
Quando non viaggio per suonare, mi piace davvero produrre musica, e dopo tutti questi anni, mi piace ancora dedicare tante ore nel mio studio. Il problema è che non è facile bilanciare questa vita vagabonda con la mia famiglia, questo è sicuramente il motivo per cui sono ancora single;) A parte questo, mi piace andare al ristorante; sono un grande amante del cibo e per tutte le destinazioni in cui suonerò, so già in quale ristorante andrò a mangiare.
Come pensi il panorama house e dance sia cambiato da quando hai iniziato?
Negli ultimi cinque anni penso ci sia stata una tendenza più techno di quello che c’era prima e meno tribal. Come sappiamo le tendenze si muovono in un ciclo eterno e nessuno può ignorare la musica elettronica di oggi, così tecnologicamente sviluppata. Un altro aspetto importante è che internet ti permette di lavorare in tempo reale con musicisti e cantanti in tutto il mondo.
Qual è il tuo rapporto con i fan? Ti piace interagire con loro ed inoltre farli partecipi dei tuoi spostamenti e nuove produzioni attraverso il web?
Certo, bisogna curare bene i social network. I follower vogliono sapere di te, non solo dove suonerai la prossima volta. E’ importante comunicare con loro e creare nuovi rapporti d’amicizia; anche se non hanno un tuo pezzo, non fa male condividere la tua vita con loro.
Qual è stata la tua esperienza professionale più gratificante?
Ce ne sarebbero tante da mensionare, che abbia viaggiato in tutto il mondo, suonato nei migliori club dove solitamente ricevi un caloroso benvenuto, mangiato nei migliori ristoranti, dormito nei più begli hotel…sebbene ci siano degli inconvenienti, attese in aeroporto, voli lunghissimi e talvolta scarsa organizzazione dei promoters ovvero alcune serate non funzionano come dovrebbero ma, come dico sempre, è il miglior lavoro del mondo. Non si può negare la soddisfazione di essere invitato a suonare nei migliori club mondiali, come il Womb a Tokyo per la seconda volta di recente, o al Rex a Parigi due settimane fa. E’ la stessa cosa quando i migliori dj al mondo ti chiedono di remixarli.
Su cosa stai lavorando al momento e quali progetti hai per il futuro?
Il 2014 è stato grandioso per me, i pezzi (e remix) “Sheeta”, ‘Summer Drops’, ‘No More’, ‘Poema’, ‘Truesoul’, ‘Magic’ e ‘Melody’ hanno tutti funzionato davvero bene. Quest’anno abbiamo prodotto “Swan”, un pezzo di un giovane artista Italiano, Simone Liberali, che abbiamo remixato con il mio amico Yvan Genkins per la mia etichetta Clarisse. Sempre quest’anno il remix di Chus & Ceballos “They say nothing” è stato prodotto sulla loro etichetta Stereo Production. Toolroom ha appena prodotto il remix di Jay Lumen del nostro pezzo “What you say”, il quale sarà presente nella loro compilation Miami Underground 2015, e la Defected ha fatto lo stesso con “Melody” per il mix Defected in the House Miami 2015. Un altro pezzo, “Crawfish” fatto da Yvan è stato reinterpretato su Hot Since 82 Knee Deep in Sound Miami sampler, e sta facendo molto bene nella Top 100 Tech House di Beatport. Ho remixato “Fire Alarm” di Coyu per la sua etichetta Suara, e a metà Aprile il remix che ho fatto per Scumfrog “Send Wave” su Knee Deep in Sound. Allo stesso modo sto remixando un Cd compilation, Toolroom Live 03 e sto anche raggruppando 10 pezzi originali di alcuni nomi interessanti, Cocodrills, Paul C & Paolo Martini, Spencer K, Collective Machine e li sto mixando per una speciale Deeperfect compilation. Oh, prima di dimenticarlo, i miei pezzi “Magic” e “Melody” stanno per essere remixati da Second City, Tapesh, Dos Santos & Christian Nielsen su Material Series. Abbiamo iniziato la permanenza settimanale per Clarisse Djs su Ibiza Global Radio, qualche settimana fa, ogni mercoledi alle 23.00 CET. Suono allo Space di Ibiza il 2 maggio per il Lovin Ibiza festival e ritorno dalla mia mensile permanenza al Blue Marlin beach club. Poi inizierò una nuova permanenza mensile al Sankeys e suonerò su Ibiza Radio per i party in barca, presentati dal mio amico David Moreno. Sarò con Hot Since 82 a suonare all’evento Knee Deep In Sound al Sonar di Barcellona, ho inoltre schedulato il festival al Track Terrace di Budapest, Kudos Beach Romania, Dreambeach Villaricos, ElectroZIles, per nominarne alcuni. Sta per arrivare un’altra bellissima estate…

Hello David! thanks for being our guest on Voce Spettacolo. You occupy an important place in the house scene all over the world. Can you tell us how you started djing and producing your music? 


“My interest in electronic music began in the late 80s when acid house was emerging. I was the only guy at school listening to it because everyone else was into rap, hard rock or new wave; with my Smiley printed t-shirts and pants, I was not really part of the in-crowd : ) I started to play in local clubs in Geneva (where I was born), but my first break was the release of the first version of ‘Everybody I Got Him’ on George Morel’s label Groove On in 2000. Then there was the release of ‘Tell Me’ featuring Christie K the year after, also on Groove On, which was ranked number 1 in DJ Mag UK. “But the track ‘Everybody I Got Him’ really pushed me forward – Luciano fell in love with the new 2009 version, and asked me to join the Cadenza family as a result.” 


You’ve worked with other big artists like Steve Lawler, DJ Sneak, Nina Kraviz, Deadmau5, Yousef and others which allow you to be known as one of the best producer in the industry. When remixing your tracks, where do you mainly get your influence from ?


“The most important thing for me is to have a nice sample or vocal that catches my ear – that’s what makes me want to work on it. Even if I receive a great track, without a catchy sample, the job could be a nightmare. Usually, I don’t agree to remix a track that doesn’t have that one element – it doesn’t matter who it comes from.” 


You’ve played all over the world within the biggest clubs. How do you organize your life according to your international busy schedule ?


“When I’m not travelling to play out I really love to produce and, after all these years, I really still enjoy spending hours in my studio. The problem is that it’s not easy to balance this vagabond life with a family life – this is certainly why I’m still single ; ) Other than that, I love going to restaurants; I’m a real food lover, and for pretty much every destination I play I know now which restaurant I’m gonna go to.” 


How do you think the House and dance soundscape has changed since you started?


“In the last five years I think it’s balanced out into a bit more techno than before and a bit less tribal. As we know, trends move in an eternal cycle, and you cannot ignore today’s electronic music being so technologically advanced. Another major point is that the internet allows you to work in real time with musicians and singers from around the world.” 


What’s your relationship with your fans? Do you like to interact with them and also make them aware of your moves and releases through the web?


“Sure, you have to take good care of your social networks. Your followers want to know about you, not just where you’re playing next. It’s important to communicate with them and create a more friendly relationship – if they can’t get to a gig of yours, it doesn’t hurt to share “your life” with them.”
What is you most gratifying professional experience ?


“There are too many to mention; you travel all over the planet, play in the best clubs where you usually receive a warm welcome, eat in the best restaurants, sleep in the nicest hotels…although there are some inconveniences – waiting times at airports, long flights and sometimes poor organization from promoters meaning a few nights don’t go as they should, as I say all the time, it’s the best job in the world. You can’t deny the satisfaction from being invited to play at the best clubs in the world, such as the Womb in Tokyo for the second time recently or Rex in Paris two weeks ago. And the same goes for when the best DJs on the planet ask you for remixes.” 


What are you working at present and what are your plans for the future ?


“2014 has been a huge year for me – the tracks (and remixes for) ‘Sheeta’, ‘Summer Drops’, ‘No More’, ‘Poema’, ‘Truesoul’, ‘Magic’ and ‘Melody’ have all done really well. This year we have released ‘Swan’, a track from young Italian artist Simone Liberali that I’ve remixed with my buddy Yvan Genkins for my label Clarisse. On the same day, my remix of Chus & Ceballos’ ‘They Say Nothing’ came out on their Stereo Productions label. Toolroom just released Jay Lumen’s remix of our track ‘What You Say’, which will be on their Miami Underground 2015 compilation, and Defected have done the same with ‘Melody’ for their Defected In The House Miami 2015 mix. Another track made with Yvan called ‘Crawfish’ has just been featured on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound Miami 2015 sampler, and is doing very well in the Beatport tech house TOP100. “I have remixed Coyu’s ‘Fire Alarm’ on his label Suara, and mid April there’ll be a remix I’ve done for The Scumfrog’s ‘Send Wave’ on Knee Deep in Sound. At the same time, I’m going to mix one of Toolroom’s Live 03 Compilation CDs, and I’m gathering 10 original tracks from some nice names – Cocodrills, Paul C & Paolo Martini, Spencer K, Collective Machine – and mixing them for a special Deeperfect compilation. Oh and before I forget, my tracks ‘Magic’ and ‘Melody’ are going to be remixed by Second City, Tapesh, Dos Santos & Christian Nielsen on Material Series. 

“We started a weekly residency for Clarisse DJs on Ibiza Global Radio a few weeks ago, every Wednesdays 23:00 CET. I play at Space Ibiza on May 2nd for Lovin Ibiza festival and will be back for my monthly residency at the amazing Blue Marlin beach club. Then I begin a new monthly residency at Sankeys and play on the Ibiza Global Radio boat parties, which are hosted by my friend David Moreno. I will join Hot Since 82 to play on his Knee Deep In Sound showcase at Sonar Barcelona, and I’m already pencilled in for festivals at Track Terrace Budapest, Kudos Beach Romania, Dreambeach Villaricos, ElectroZIles, to name a few. Another amazing summer is coming…”
