Il nostro redattore Michele Valente ha intervistato il celebre Stonebridge, Dj e Producer internazionale. Di seguito l’intervista esclusiva per voi lettori.
 
Ciao Sten, sei originario di Stoccolma, Svezia, dove vivi ancora oggi. Come hai iniziato a fare il dj e produrre la tua musica?
Si, sono nato e cresciuto a Stoccolma. Ho iniziato nel 1983 quando mio padre ha pensato che prendere un dj fosse troppo costoso per la laurea di mia sorella; io avevo molti dischi per cui l’ho fatto io. Mi sono divertito così tanto che non sono più tornato indietro. Nel 1986 ho fondato SweMix, uno studio di remix, con altri 5 dj ed abbiamo remixato pezzi famosi e fatto dei dischi. Quando lo studio ha cominciato ad affermarsi ho iniziato a produrre la mia musica, era circa il 1988. Uno di questi dischi è diventato un successo in UK e per la stessa etichetta, la Champion Records, lavorava un cantante americano, Robin Stone (Robin S – Show me Love). Gli ho chiesto se potevo remixarlo ed il risultato fu una grandissima hit che mi ha dato molto successo negli anni ’93-’94.
Qual è stata la tua fonte d’ispirazione e cosa t’ispira maggiormente oggi?
Suonare live è la mia maggiore fonte di ispirazione. Mi muovo in tour in tutto il mondo e quello che m’ispira di più è il pubblico e ciò che ascolto e suono nei vari club. Suono sempre molte delle mie produzioni e ciò su cui sto lavorando in modo da testarlo e perfezionarlo fino a quando è perfetto.
Hai remixato ed avuto collaborazioni con importanti artisti come Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, Will Smith, Missy Elliott, Lenny Kravitz, Simple Minds, Enrique Iglesias, Armand Van Helden e molti altri. Secondo te quanto sono importanti le connessioni con altri artisti per migliorarsi e capire le nuove inclinazioni e tendenze musicali?
Direi che i remix per i grossi personaggi sono stati molto importanti, ma oggi molto meno. Ci sono così tanti produttori e produzioni oggi che bisogna emergere in altri modi. Direi che un bel pezzo che attira l’attenzione di altri dj, la radio ed i canali principali sono il modo in cui puoi venir fuori oggi. Nel momento in cui hai un pezzo di successo, le etichette ti assumono per fare grossi remix.
Come ti rapporti con i tuoi fan? Ti piace essere seguito sui social network e a tal proposito dedichi loro un po’ del tuo tempo?
Amo i miei fan e trascorro ore ad interagire con loro. Spesso concedo anche download gratuiti per ringraziare la gente che mi segue. Cerco di rispondere a tutte le domande e spesso invio pezzi che la gente cerca, specialmente quelli più vecchi.
Oggi è più facile pubblicare e diffondere musica, soprattutto musica dance, grazie ai tanti siti dedicati che promuovono artisti ed i loro pezzi. Che ne pensi?
Tutto ciò mi piace molto. 10-15 anni fa era impossibile raggiungere tante persone solo con un tuo post. D’altra parte prima era più esclusivo e difficile per la gente venire in possesso di pezzi non ancora conosciuti, quindi era più emozionante. Io comunque preferisco com’è adesso, è più emozionante avere successo e permettere alla gente di ascoltare musica su scala molto maggiore.
Pensi che il mondo dei club e della dance in generale siano cambiati da quando hai cominciato?
Oh si, ci sono stati cambiamenti radicali. La disco tradizionale come i club dance sono ormai superati. Ora devi essere nel posto giusto. I proprietari dei club devono vendere molte bottiglie per pagare gli alti compensi dei dj, per cui i club hanno delle aree VIP molto estese che spesso intralciano lo spazio per ballare. Inoltre noto che meno persone escono per ascoltare bella musica, oggi è come una grossa contaminazione social o solo andare a vedere un dj con un grande nome. Ovviamente ci sono ancora molti club underground ma mi mancano in un certo senso i club dance dove passavi una bella serata e dove non mettevano solo le grosse hit ma anche cose più originali.
Nella tua carriera quanto è importante aver conoscenza della musica in generale e tutte le sue declinazioni?
Per me è tutto. Ho tanti ricordi dei club e di musica di quando ero piccolo che ancora mi influenzano. Come ad esempio aver trascorso l’estate a Rimini, andare al solito bar e discoteca tutte le sere. Ho ascoltato così tanta bella musica quelle estati. Suono anche chitarra e tastiere e sui miei pezzi ci suono sopra, compongo anche la musica delle mie canzoni. Lavoro con i cantanti per la parte vocale ed ho anche una buona conoscenza musicale, ho imparato anche alcuni trucchetti col passare degli anni.
Qual è stata la tua più gratificante esperienza professionale?
Difficile dirne una, ma la nomination al Grammy 2009 è stata importante. Ero seduto lì a Los Angeles e aspettavo che il mio nome fosse pronunciato e vicino a me c’erano Deadmau5 e Morgan Page, Paul McCartney era passato sulla destra ed i Coldplay erano sul palco solo un pò distanti da me. E’ stata davvero una bella esperienza. Anche vedere il mio mix di Robin S « Show me love » su Top of the Pops UK è stato esagerato. Non sapevo fosse diventata una hit ed io l’ho visto in Tv quando ero a Londra.
Programmi e progetti per il futuro?
Sto lavorando a 3 nuovi singoli. Uno è in collaborazione con Robbie Rivera e 2 sono miei singoli. Tutti e 3 usciranno in primavera estate.

Hi Sten, you’re originally from Stockholm, Sweden, where you still live. How did you start djing and producing your music?
Yes, born and bread in Stockholm. I started 1983 when my father thought a DJ would be too expensive for my sister’s graduation and I had a lot of records so I got the job. It was so much fun that I never looked back. In 1986 I started a DJ remix company called SweMix with five other DJs and we remixed hot tracks and pressed them up on vinyl. As the studio got better, I started producting original music around 1988. One of these early records became a hit in the UK and the same label, Champion Records, has this American singer, Robin Stone. I asked if I could remix it and the result was a huge hit and gave me a worldwide break around 1993-1994.
Where di you get your music influence from and what most inspires you, nowadays?
I get my main inspiration from playing live. I tour worldwide and get influences from both the crowd and what I play and hear in clubs. I always play a lot of my own productions and things I’m working on so I can test and tweak until they are perfect.
You’ve remixed and had collaborations with important artists like Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, Will Smith, Missy Elliott, Lenny Kravitz, Simple Minds, Enrique Iglesias, Armand Van Helden, and many others. According to you how important are the connections in the industry with other artists, in order to improve yourselves and understand the change of music inclinations and trends?
I would say the big stars and remixes for them used to be very important, but not so much anymore. There are so many producers and releases now that you have to stand out in other ways. A really good song or track that gets the attention of other DJs first, then radio and mainstream is the way to go now I would say. Once you have the hot track, labels want to hire you for the big mixes.
What is your relationship with your fans? Do you enjoy being followed on social network and in regards to this do you dedicate them some of your time?
I love my fans and spend hours a day interacting with them. I also do free downloads every now ad then to give something back to the people that support me. I try to answer all direct questions and very often send people tracks they are looking for, especially the older stuff.
Nowadays it’s much easier to broadcast and diffuse music and most of all dance music thanks to many ad-hoc built websites, promoting artists and their tunes. What do you think about this?
I really like it. 10-15 years ago, it was impossible to reach a huge amount of people with just a post. On the other hand, it was more exclusive before and harder for people to get hold of an unreleased track so you could build up more excitement. I do prefer it this way though, it’s more exciting to be able to cut through and get people to hear the music on a much bigger scale.
Do you think the world of Clubs and dance music in general has changed since you started?
Oh yes, dramatical changes. The traditional disco, like a dance club is pretty much gone. Now it’s more about beeing seen in the right place. Club owners need to sell a lot of bottles to pay the high DJ fees so the clubs now have large VIP sections that sometimes interfere with the dance floor space. I also notice that less people go out just to hear great music, it’s more of a social gathering or ‘see’ a big name DJ. There are of course a lot of underground clubs still, but I sort of miss the dance clubs where you could have a great night not just playing the big hits, but more adventurous stuff.
How important is to have a good knowledge of music in general and all its declinations in your career?
For me it has been everything. I have a lot of clubbing and music memories from when I was a kid that still influences me. Like spending the summers in Rimini, Italy going to the same bar then the same club every night. Heard so much good music those summers. I also play guitar and keyboards so I play all the music on my records and write the music to my songs. I work with singers for the lyrics and vocals, but have good musical knowledge and have learnt a few tricks over the years.
What was you most gratifying professional experience?
Very hard to point out one, but the Grammy nomination 2009 was big. I sat there in LA waiting for my name to be called and next to me was Deadmau5 and Morgan Page, Paul McCartney walked past on the right and Coldplay were on stage just a bit away. It was a very cool experience. Also seeing my mix of Robin S ‘Show Me Love’ on UK’s Top Of The Pops was totally wild. I had no idea it was a hit and just saw it on TV when I was in London.
What are your plans and projects for the future?
I’m now working on three new singles. One is a collaboration with Robbie Rivera and two are my own artist singles. All three will come during spring and early summer.
