Ciao Tara, grazie per essere nostra ospite su Voce Spettacolo. Dicci qualcosa su di te, come hai iniziato a cantare?
Sono una cantante e cantautrice britannica, cresciuta in un’area di campagna, appena fuori Londra. Amo scrivere canzoni per i miei progetti e per altri artisti. Il mio stato d’animo del momento è “una canzone, un concetto”. Sono una ragazza di campagna e mi piace essere a contatto con la natura. Mi rende tranquilla. In passato ero una pessima cuoca ed odiavo cucinare, ma da quando sono diventata vegana, ho sviluppato una nuova passione per il cibo. Ho una cagnolina di nome Annie ed è l’amore della mia vita, è una mini schnauzer e da 7 anni la considero la mia bimba pelosa! :D. Sono vegana da 8 mesi ed ora posso dire sia una delle cose migliori che abbia fatto per me stessa, per la mia salute, per il pianeta e per gli animali! Mangiare a base di piante è una buona dieta Karma! :D. Sono una ragazza dallo stile abbastanza “femminile”, mi piace la moda ed il trucco, potrei spendere segretamente una fortuna su Ebay! :D. Sono sempre molto emozionata quando il mio team “vegano, contro la violenza e alla moda” mi consiglia nuovi costumi per il palcoscenico, perchè è un’occasione per esagerare dato che sono molto riservata in privato…ma non ho paura di sfruttare la mia voce per l’uguaglianza, i diritti delle donne, le comunità LGBTQ (Omosessuali e transgender) e i diritti degli animali.
Mi è sempre piaciuto cantare e sapevo che era quello che volevo fare nella vita sin da piccola. Senza esser banale, ho sempre saputo fosse il mio destino. Non ho vissuto un bel periodo a scuola, sono stata vittima di bullismo. Ho perso molta fiducia in me e a 9 anni mia madre decise di portarmi ad un seminario per bambini per un’esibizione nella sala di una chiesa locale. E’ stato lì che ho cantato da sola per la prima volta e l’organizzatore, mi suggerì di fare un’audizione per il musical “Les Miserables” a Londra. Lo feci ed ottenni il ruolo! Era la mia prima occasione ed è stato incredibile lavorare con adulti professionisti ed anche avere quel senso di evasione dalla mia situazione difficile, vissuta a scuola. Poichè nessuno nella mia famiglia lavorava nel settore musicale, mi sono sentita un pò persa. Subito dopo, però, ho rappresentato l’Inghilterra in una competizione internazionale per bambini, che ha ospitato fra il pubblico Audrey Hepburn, Gina Lollobrigida e la regina d’Olanda, ed ho vinto! A 12 anni ho avuto il privilegio di essere la più giovane ambasciatrice per l’UNICEF e fare il mio primo disco e video musicale in Africa per promuovere i diritti dei bambini, e per cui ne vado molto fiera.
Ho finito per calcare diversi percorsi per farmi strada nel settore della musica, facendo la corista e ballerina per artisti pop, autrice di canzoni per altri artisti e persino lavorare per una compagnia di registrazione dove preparavo tè e caffè, odiavo farlo! :D. Le mie occasioni sembra siano state felici incidenti di percorso!
Parliamo delle tue collaborazioni con artisti quali David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, Afrojack, Axwell, Armand Van Helden, Bryan Ferry e molti altri. Quanto sono state importanti queste collaborazioni nella tua carriera e che opinione hai in merito alle connessioni con altri artisti del settore, per potersi esprimere al meglio?
Una delle cose più importanti che ne è derivata dal lavorare con grandi artisti è il riconoscimento da parte del settore che hai talento. Ti colloca anche nei radar dei fan della musica. La gente che lavora nel settore musicale, di solito non vuole prendere rischi e la gran cosa di esser protagonisti in pezzi di artisti rispettati, è che improvvisamente hai un sigillo di approvazione attaccato. Dà alla gente più sicurezza di credere in un nuovo artista.
Personalmente ho sempre sofferto di bassa autostima e ho sempre avuto molti dubbi. Lavorare con queste persone mi ha dato più sicurezza in me stessa. Quando lavoravo con Bryan Ferry per il suo album “Dylanesque”, mi disse che amava circondarsi di grandi cantanti e coristi, perchè ciò lo faceva sentire più sicuro. Mi ha insegnato che anche gli artisti più consolidati soffrono degli stessi demoni ed hanno molti dubbi! Persino leggende come Bryan Ferry! Ho constatato la stessa sensazione negli occhi di David Guetta quando lavorava all’album “Pop Life” e quando a Londra mi ha suonato in cuffia l’intero progetto su cui lavorare. Sarò per sempre grata a David per avermi dato visibilità, portandomi in tour con lui ed esser stata la prima artista ad apparire protagonista nei suio video musicali. Ho imparato tanto lavorando con Axwell perchè ero molto giovane e “ingenua”, il resto voglio che rimanga privato per il momento(!) ma gli sono grata perchè la nostra collaborazione ha colto l’attenzione di Armand Van Helden che mi ha chiesto di esser protagonista in “My My My” che è diventata un vero “inno” della musica dance! Anche da una situazione negativa, qualcosa di positivo può accadere. Me l’ha insegnato mio padre! 😀
Singoli come”Give me more” o ”Shooting Star” ed anche quelli di Armand Van Helden ”My My My”, Axwell ”Feel the vibe“, David Guetta ”Delirious“ hanno avuto un enorme successo ed ancora restano nei cuori di molta gente. Secondo te cosa ci vuole per realizzare una hit di successo?
Onestamente mi piacerebbe saperlo! Da parte mia provo sempre a dare il massimo in un progetto e ad immedesimarmi totalmente. Se una canzone mi colpisce, allora c’è buona possibilità che colpisca altri. La cosa più importante è che mi faccia star bene. Credo che il mio lavoro principale sia di essere più onesta possibile verso me stessa, tener fede al processo e concedermi di esser libera e creativa. Cerco di non pensare a ciò che succede quando il disco è finito ed arriva all’etichetta, alla stampa o in radio, in quanto appena la canzone lascia lo studio non è più in realtà solo mia. Fa la sua strada. Per esempio il mio precedente singolo “I Need a Miracle” ha avuto un fantastico percorso che era completamente inaspettato: è stato al numero 1 in diversi paesi in Europa, utilizzato in un film nel Regno Unito e soprattutto è stato scelto come “inno Europride” del 2016, per cui vado molto fiera.
Quanto sono importanti i tuo fan per te? Dedichi loro un pò del tuo tempo?
Amo i miei fan, sono i migliori! Li chiamo “Stelle” perchè in verità lo sono! Cerco sempre di ricavare del tempo per loro attraverso i social media ed in persona nei backstage, quando sono in tour o per fare promozione. Infatti il mio tour manager mi odia perchè sono sempre in ritardo perchè voglio passare un pò di tempo con loro! :D. E’ sempre un piacere poter fare competizioni o eventi speciali sui miei social media, quando non possiamo incontrarci di persona. Mi piace coccolare i miei fan, se lo meritano, sono stelle dopo tutto
Hai anche fatto una notevole esperienza in radio, con il programma dance ”I like this Beat” su Dash Radio, ed anche in Tv, avendo lavorato come assistente vocale nella prima serie Tv ”The Voice” in Belgio.
Cosa puoi dirci di queste esperienze e cosa ti piace quando lavori in Tv o in radio?
Non si può mettere sullo stesso piano lavorare in un programma radio da casa con la macchina aziendale “The Voice”. La prima cosa è un piccolo team e sono io il capo di me stessa, l’altra è un business enorme ed io sono solo uno degli ingranaggi!
Il mio programma radio “I Like This Beat” è iniziato quando il capo di una radio francese mi ha invitato a fare l’ospite in un programma dance in radio. Mi ha proposto uno slot di un’ora, l’ho fatto e mi è piaciuto! Mi sono così divertita in libertà che non c’era nessuno che mi diceva cosa fare, cosa suonare e neppure cosa dire! Avevo il completo controllo artistico dello show. Ho utilizzato il programma come veicolo per dare visibilità a nuovi artisti che personalmente pensavo fossero bravi ed anche per promuovere cantanti e cantautori che normalmente rimangono nell’ombra. Registravo il programma da casa ed era un modo così rilassato di lavorare, solo io ed il mio team. A volte alcuni amici venivano a trovarmi per sentire gli ultimi pezzi, a volte eravamo anche un pò brilli 😀 ed altre volte registravo in pigiama e pantofole con una maschera di crema sulla faccia! 😀 Questo è il bello della radio perchè non si può vedere cosa fai e come appari! Il programma ha finito per esser diffuso in 50 paesi nel mondo e sulla compagnia aerea Emirates e dopo più di 100 puntate a volte mi manca.
Lavorare a “The Voice” in Belgio è stato un lavoro complesso perchè il programma era in francese, ed al tempo il mio francese era ad un livello base. A volte mi sono ritrovata ad annuire anche se non capivo cosa si stesse dicendo e la telecamera registrava! 😀 Detto ciò, è stata un’esperienza davvero positiva e sono fiera di averne fatto parte. Il programma gira attorno a veri cantanti ed il loro talento grezzo e molti dei partecipanti volevano cantare in Inglese. In tutti questi anni di esperienza mi sono accorta che sapevo molto più di ciò che pensavo di sapere e ho potuto aiutare i concorrenti non solo con le loro esibizioni, ma anche con trucchi per memorizzare i testi e con la psicologia per farli sentire più sicuri. Il talento è come un frutto, puoi vederne il potenziale ma potrebbe ancora non esser maturo. Tutti i concorrenti di “The Voice” erano ad un diverso livello nella loro evoluzione come artisti, ma ci poteva essere solo un vincitore. Il vincitore era pronto ed era parte del mio team! Sono molto felice di aver fatto parte di questo percorso.
Ero terrorizzata di esser parte di “The Voice” ma come potevo dire di no..! La stessa cosa è successa per il programma radio. Ho pensato “Come posso essere in grado di produrre il mio programma radio personale”? Ma poi io scendo sempre con i piedi per terra:D Credo che la vita ti presenti una sfida quando sei pronto ad affrontarla e quando la affronti a testa alta, si cresce!
Alla fine del 2017 è stato prodotto da Laurent Jaccoux e Kim N’Guyen il tuo nuovo singolo “Taxxxi!”. Cosa puoi dirci a proposito ed a cosa ti sei ispirata? Quali sono le tue aspettative?
”Taxxxi” è nella mia fantasia non una canzone d’amore ma del “desiderio”. La chiamo “50 sfumature di Taxxxi” 😀 La storia è di una ragazza che aspetta un taxi, ha appena lasciato la discoteca, ha bevuto qualche drink ed è un pò arrogante, mentre incontra un bel ragazzo e si lascia travolgere da momenti di passione. Il feeling tra loro è esplosivo e lei si lascia andare passionalmente. E’ vagamente basata su una serata che trascorsi con un calciatore italiano, sono sicura che capirete che dovrò tener segreto il suo nome 😀 Ci siamo incontrati ad un mio show in Croazia e c’è stata un’alchimia incredibile tra noi. Finimmo per ballare in una piccola piazza di una città ed io ero completamente incantata. Mi sembrava fosse una scena di un film! 😀 Musicalmente “Taxxxi” è un pò nostalgica, perchè ho ascoltato molto pop anni ’80 ultimamente e ho fatto una “scorpacciata” guardando “Stranger Things” su Netflix. Penso che tali influenze mi abbiano portato agli anni ’80 ispirati dal sintetizzatore pop e per me è davvero una canzone spensierata, divertente e mi fa sentir bene.
In realtà abbiamo scritto il pezzo tanto rapidamente che sembrava si scrivesse da sè. Nella musica ho imparato ad aspettarmi l’inaspettato, una volta che un pezzo è fuori dallo studio non è più solo la mia creatura, ma fa la sua vita. E’ un pò come avere un bambino che instaurerà le sue relazioni con gli altri. Alcuni se ne innamoreranno ed altri no. Ho dovuto accettare il fatto che lasciar fare il proprio corso è parte del processo artistico.
Che consigli o suggerimenti vorresti dare ai giovani cantanti per costruire una carriera di successo?
Bhè, è difficile perchè nessuna carriera sarà mai la stessa, non c’è un modello da seguire. Uno più due non fa tre nel business della musica, ma la mia vita mi ha insegnato ad accogliere nuove esperienze perchè non saprai mai chi incontrerai e cosa ti potrebbero portare. Ricordarsi sempre dove si è diretti e qual’è il proprio fine, anche se sembra lontanissimo. Continuare ad andare avanti! Ho visto i miei 2 album non andar bene in passato ed ora sto firmando il contratto per il mio terzo album. Avrei potuto lasciar perdere ma non è nella mia natura. Mollare non è mai stata neppure un opzione! Non ho un piano B. Penso che bisogna pensare in autonomia se vuoi raggiungere il successo in qualsiasi business. La fiducia in te stesso sarà messa alla prova ma bisogna tener duro in quei momenti. E se lavori duro, verrà il tuo momento. Il business è come le montagne russe per tutti, per cui bisogna festeggiare i propri successi. Molti artisti nel settore musicale sono stati truffati, ed io non sono un’eccezione. E’ bene prendersi un buon avvocato! 😀
Quali sono i tuoi programmi e progetti per il futuro? Ci vuoi dare qualche anticipazione?
Al momento sto finendo il mio secondo e terzo singolo con il mio team a Parigi. Anche se sono di Londra mi piace molto lavorare a Parigi, è molto d’ispirazione, così com’è magica Roma. Sono sommersa tra battute e testi al momento! Il mio EP ed album usciranno più avanti quest’anno. Sono molto influenzata dalla cultura pop per come la vedono i miei occhi, ed ho notato una elemento costante che emerge “una canzone un concetto”, dal tema della chirurgia plastica come forma non realistica di bellezza alla canzone satira della leadership di Donald Trump in America. Penso che il filo rosso del progetto sia il tema della libertà, evasione e canzoni che arricchiscono e ci ricordano che in questo mondo confuso e politicamente instabile, è importante arrivare a fine giornata e godersi i momenti! La vita è per esser vissuta, godiamocela! 😀

Hello Tara, thanks for being our guest on Voce Spettacolo.
Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? How did you start singing?
I’m a UK singer – songwriter born in the countryside, just outside London. I love writing songs for my project and for other artists too. My mood of the moment is one song one concept. I’m a country girl and love being close to nature. It calms me. I used to be a terrible cook and hated cooking but since becoming vegan, I developed a new passion for food. I have a little dog called Annie that is the love of my life, she’s a white miniture schnauzer I consider since 7 years like my hairy baby! 😀 I’ve been vegan for 8 months now and can honestly say it’s one of the best thing I’ve ever done for myself, my health, the planet and the animals! Eating plant-based food is a good karma diet! 😀 I’m quite a “girly girl”, I love fashion and make up – I could spend a fortune secretly on eBay! 😀 I always get very excited when my “vegan cruelty-free glam” team suggests me new costumes for stage as it’s a chance to go crazy as I’m very shy in private… But I’m not scared to use my voice for equality, women rights, to promote LGBTQ rights, and for animal rights.
I’ve always loved singing and knew it was what I wanted to do with my life from a very early age. Without being too corny I always felt it was my destiny. I had a bad time at school and was bullied. I was losing a lot of confidence and so when I was 9 years old my mum decided to take me to a children’s performance workshop in a local church hall. It was here that I sang solo for the first time and the man running the workshop suggested I audition for the musical “Les Miserables” in London. I did it and got the job! It was my first break and was incredible to work with professional adults and also have a sense of escapisim from the difficult environment at school. As no one in my family works in the entertainment industry, I felt lost. But soon after, I represented England in a international children’s song competition hosted by Audrey Hepburn with Gina Lollobridida and the Queen of Holland in the audience, which I won! So at 12, I had the privilege to be the youngest ambassador for UNICEF and making my first record and music video in Africa promoting the “rights of the child”. Which I’m very proud of.
I ended up walking many roads to make my way in the music industry, from being a backing singer and dancer for pop artist, songwriter for other artists and even working at a record company making tea and coffee, which I hated! 😀 My lucky breaks feels like happy accident!
Let’s talk about your collaborations with important artists like David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, Afrojack, Axwell, Armand Van Helden, Bryan Ferry and many others.
How important have been these collaborations for your career and what’s your opinion about connections with other artists in the industry, in order to better express oneself?
One of the most important things that came from working with big artists is a validation to the industry that you have talent. It puts you on the radar to music fans as well. People in the music business usually don’t want to take risks and the great thing about featuring on respected artists track is that suddenly you have a stamp of approval behind you. It gives people more confidence to believe in a new artist. Personally I’d always suffered with self doubt and low self esteem. Working with these people gave me more confidence in myself. When I was working with Bryan Ferry on his “Dylanesque” album, he told me he loves to surround himself with great singers as backing vocalists as it made him feel more confident. That taught me that even the most established artists suffer from the same demons and have self doubt! Even legends like Bryan Ferry! I saw the same feeling in David Guetta’s eyes when he was working on the “Pop Life” album and when he played me the whole project in London through headphones for me to work on. I’m forever greatful to David as he really helped to put me on the map bringing me on tour with him and being the first featured artist to appear in his music videos. I learnt a great lesson working with Axwell as I was very young and naïve, the rest has to stay private for now (!) but I’m thankful as our collaboration caught the attention of Armand Van Helden asked me to feature on “My My My” which became a real dance music anthem! Even out of a negative situation, something positive can happen. My father taught me that! 😀
Singles like ”Give me more” or ”Shooting Star” and also Armand Van Helden ”My My My”, Axwell ”Feel the vibe“, David Guetta ”Delirious“ had a great success and still remain in the hearts of many people. What would you say it takes to realize a successful hit?
Honestly I wish I knew! I always try and give myself over to a project and immerse myself fully. If a song touches me then there’s a good chance it will touch others. Most importantly it has to feel good. I see my main job as being as honest with myself as possible, keeping faith in the process and allowing myself to be free and creative. I try not to think about what happens after the record is finished and goes to the record label, press or radio, as once the song leaves the studio it’s not really just mine anymore. It has its own life. For example my previous single “I Need a Miracle” had a wonderful journey that was completely unexpected: it was number 1 in a few countries in Europe, synced in a movie in the UK and best of all was chosen as the Europride anthem for 2016 which made me really proud.
How important are your fans for you? Do you dedicate them some of your time?
I love my fans, they are the best! I call them “stars” because actually they are! I always try to set aside time for them through social medias and in person backstage when I’m on tour or promotion. In fact, my tour manager hates me as I’m always late because I want spend time with them! 😀 He literally has to drag me away! 😀 It’s always a pleasure to give away competitions and special events on my social when we can’t meet in person. I love to spoil my fans, they deserve it, they are stars after all.
You also have achieved remarkable experiences within the radio, with the dance program ”I like this Beat” on Dash Radio, and also on Tv, having worked as assistant vocal coach on the first series of the TV show ”The Voice” in Belgium.
What can you tell us about these experiences and what do you like about working on Tv or radio?
You can’t really compare working with a home grown radio program to the corporate machine of “The Voice”. One is a small organic team where I am my own boss, the other is a giant business where I’m just one of the cogs!
My own radio show « I Like This Beat » started when the head of a french radio station suggested I host a dance music radio show. He offered me a one hour slot, I did it and loved it! I had so much fun and freedom as there was nobody telling me what to do or what to play or even what to say! I had complete artistic control of the show. I used the show as a vehicule to spotlight new artists that I personnaly thought was great and also promoted singers and songwriters as normally they stay in the shadows. I recorded the show at home and it was such a relaxed way of working, just me and my team. Sometimes friends popped over to hear the new tunes, sometimes we were drunk 😀 and other times I was recording in my pyjamas and slippers with a face mask on! 😀 That’s the beauty of radio as no one can see what you’re doing and how you look! The show ended up being diffused in 50 countries in the world and on Emirates Airline and after more than a hundred episodes sometimes I miss it.
Working on “The Voice” Belgium was quite a difficult task as the program was in French, and at that time my French was very basic. Sometimes I found myself nodding even though I didn’t understand what was being said while the cameras were rolling! 😀 Having said that, it was a really positive experience and I’m proud to have been part of it. The show is all about real singers and their raw talent, and most of the contestants wanted to sing in English. Through all my years of experience I knew more than I thought I did and was able to help the contestants not only with their performances but with tricks to memorise lyrics and with their psychology to make them more confident. Talent is like fruit, you can see the potential but it might not be ripe yet. All the contestants of “The Voice” are at different stages in their evolution as an artist, but there can be only one winner. And the winner was ready and part of my team! I’m really happy to be part of his journey.
I was terrified to be part of “The Voice” but how could I say no…! The same goes for the radio show. I thought to myself “how I am going to produce my own radio show??” But I always land on my feet 😀 I truly believe that life gives you a challenge when you are ready for it and when you face that challenge head on you’re gonna grow!
At the end of 2017 your new single ”Taxxxi”, produced by Laurent Jaccoux e Kim N’Guyen has been released. What can you tell us about it and where did you take your inspiration from? Also what are your expectations?
“Taxxxi” is my fantasy not a love song but « a lust song ». I’ve been calling it « 50 Shades of Taxxxi” 😀 The story follows a girl waiting for a Taxi, she’s just left a nightclub, had a few drinks and feeling cocky, meeting a really hot guy, being swept away in a crazy moment of passion. The feeling between them is explosive, she’s empowered sexually. It’s loosley based on an evening I had with an Italian football player, I’m sure you understand That I will keep his name secret 😀 We met at a show when I was performing in Croatia, we had incredible chemistry together. We ended up slow dancing in a small square in a town and I was completely enchanted. It felt like it was a scene from a movie! 😀 Sonically, “Taxxxi” is quite nostalgic, as I’ve been listenning to a lot of 80’s pop lately and binged watch “Stranger Things” on Netflix. I think these influences have trickled down into my 80’s synth inspired pop song and to me it’s a really carefree, fun, feel good song. We actually wrote this track so quickly that it was almost like it was writing itself. In music, I have learned to expect the unexpected, ones a song is out of the studio it’s not just my baby anymore, it has its own life. It’s a bit like having a child, as it would make his own relationships with people. Some people will fall in love connecting with it and some people won’t. I have come to accept that letting go is part of the artistic process.
What piece of advice or suggestion would you give to young singers to build a succesful career?
Well, it’s difficult as no ones career will ever be the same, there is no template to follow. One plus 2 doesn’t equal 3 in the music business but my life has taught me to embrace new experiences as you never know who you will meet and what those experiences may bring. Always remember where you are headed and what you are aiming for, even if it feels far off. Just keep moving forward! I’ve had 2 album deals fall apart in the past and have now signed my third album deal. I could have given up but it’s not in my nature. Given up was never even an option! I have no plan B. I think you have to be single minded if you want to achieve success in any business, your faith in your faith will be tested but you’ve just got to hang on in there. And if you work hard enough your time will come. This business is a roller coaster for everyone, so celebrate your successes. Most artists in the music industry have been ripped off, and I’m not exception. You better get yourself a good lawyer! 😀
What are your plans and projects for the future? Would you like to tell us something in advance?
I’m currently finishing my 2nd and 3rd single with my team in Paris. Even if I’m from London, I really love to work in Paris, it’s such an inspiring city like Rome is magical too. I’m waist deep in beats and lyrics for now! My EP and album will be released later this year. I’m heavily influenced by pop culture as seen through my eyes, and I noticed a pattern emerging “one song one concept” from plastic surgery as unrealistic form of beauty to a satire song of Donald Trump’s leadership in America. I think that the red thread of the project is the theme of freedom, escapism and uplifting songs to remind us that in this confusing world and politically unstable climat, it’s important to cease the day and enjoy the moment! Life is for living, let’s have fun! 😀
